Sneakers from apple waste? Check. Necklace made of fruit peels? Check. Discover the innovative ways that Hong Kong’s lifestyle brands are giving a new leash of life to food waste

In 2022, more than 3,302 tonnes of food waste were sent to landfills every day, according to the Environmental Protection Department. The recent indefinite postponement of the municipal solid waste charging scheme also raised awareness of the city's challenging waste management issue.

Some local brands have embraced a fresh approach by upcycling discarded food waste into essential products. From fashionable accessories to nutritious pet food, their innovative creations not only help reduce the overall waste generated but encourage consumers to make sustainable choices.

Here, Tatler introduces you to five ingenious and useful products, all made from food waste.

These trendy trainers feature apple leather, a plant-based material made from apple pomace from the juicing industry, and other upcycled farm waste. The solvent-free production process emits an average of 20 times less carbon than cow leather while maintaining similar durability. Up to 15 repurposed apples were used to create each pair. Both the Beige and Apple Green colours are gender-neutral.

The vibrant collection is made from kitchen food waste and fruit peels, including dragonfruit, carrot, orange, zucchini, butterfly pea, and eggplant. Handcrafted by young single mothers through dehydrating, grinding and mixing the food waste with vegan waste-derived resin, it symbolises females as persistent, outspoken, fierce, and authentic. The group holds jewellery-making workshops for the public to promote behavioural change to reduce food waste.

These healthy pet meals are slow-cooked using surplus vegetables from local markets and fresh meat. With no preservatives added, the eco-conscious food provides essential vitamins and minerals for furry friends. This social enterprise regularly donates products to rescued animals in local shelters, contributing to both the community and the environment.

5. Breer: Craft beer

The homegrown start-up collects surplus bread from various bakeries in Hong Kong, including one of the biggest bread manufacturers, Maxim’s, and brews it into crafted beer. Not just plain white bread, even predominantly popular pineapple buns can be transformed into tropical-flavoured drinks.
