These athletes will be flying the Singapore flag at the Olympics, also known as the biggest international multi-sport event

The 2024 Paris Olympics are just around the corner and some of the world’s best athletes are working hard to showcase their skills. From July 26 to August 11, the world’s largest sporting event will see over 10,500 athletes competing across 32 sports and among them are some of our own. Several Singaporean athletes have already secured their spots.

From veteran athletes to up-and-coming ones, here are 23 Singaporean athletes to look out for at the starting line. Read on to find out where they currently stand in the games.

1. Marc Brian Louis

The latest athlete to join Team Singapore at Louis will be making his Olympic debut at the Paris Games. He will be competing in the Men’s 100m event at the Paris Olympics on August 3. His universality spot had only been confirmed by World Athletics earlier this month.

2. Shannon Tan

Tan will be the first Singaporean golfer to compete at the Olympic Games. The 20-year-old golfer secured her spot in the women’s individual competition based on her IGF World Rankings position. While she had only turned professional earlier this year, she has made significant strides in her career, including winning the Magical Kenya Ladies Open in her Ladies European Tour (LET) debut in February 2024.

3. Gan Ching Hwee

Gan had secured a spot after meeting the Olympic Consideration Time for the Women’s 1,500m freestyle at the Singapore National Championships in June where she set her national record of 16:10.61.

At her stellar Olympic debut, Gan clocked 16 minutes and 10.13 seconds, rewriting her previous national record set at the Singapore National Swimming Championships. Finishing ninth, she was one spot shy of advancing to the finals, but she isn’t stopping anytime soon. Gan will be taking the aquatic stage again on August 2 for the Women's 800m Freestyle and on August 3 for the Women's 4 x 100m Medley Relay.

4. Teh Xiu Hong

At the Paris Olympics, Teh will be taking part in the 10 metres air pistol and 25 metres sports pistol event. She had secured her spot at the Olympics through her International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) ranking. Watch her sharp shooting skills on August 2 as she competes in the 25m Pistol Women's Qualification Precision.

5. Zhou Jingyi

Zhou earned a spot at the Games after her win at the 2024 Southeast Asian Regional Qualification Tournament. She is currently the youngest Singapore-born table tennis paddler that has qualified for the Olympics.

In a brave affront against Romania's 10th-ranked Bernadette Szocs on July 28, Zhou bowed out of her shot at medalling as Szocs gained the upper hand.

6. Zeng Jian

Zeng has qualified for the 2024 games after winning a gold for the Women’s Singles event at the 2024 Southeast Asia Qualification Tournament in Bangkok, Thailand. Zeng has been making a mark since starting her career, including earning two gold medals at the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games.

At the Paris Olympics, Zeng stood ground during a 51 minute match on July 31, but ultimately missed out on advancing to the next round of 16.

7. Izaac Quek

Quek will be making his Olympic debut at the 2024 Paris Games. He had secured his spot after winning the Men’s Singles event at the 2024 Southeast Asia Qualification Tournament in Bangkok, Thailand, after beating Thailand’s Phakpoom Sanguansin. 

At his Olympic debut in Paris on July 28, Quek missed out on advancing to the next round after a hard fight against Slovenia’s Darko Jorgic.

8. Terry Hee

Hee is set to compete in Mixed Doubles event with his wife Jessica Tan at the Paris Olympics. This will be the duo’s Olympic debut and will be the first mixed doubles pair to represent Singapore since the 2008 Games. 

The duo beat the United States’s Vinson Chiu and Jennie Gai on July 29 at the Paris Olympics, finishing third out of four teams in their group, ultimately ending their journey at the games as only the top two teams advance to the quarter-finals. 

9. Jessica Tan

Tan will compete with Hee in the Mixed Doubles event in Paris. The duo are currently ranked No. 17 in the Badminton World Federation rankings.

The duo missed out on advancing to the quarter-finals on July 29 at the Paris Olympics. 

10. Veronica Shanti Pereira

Singapore’s sprint queen will be competing in the women’s 200m in Paris. Pereira currently holds three national records in the women’s 100m, 200m and 400m. This will be her second attempt at the Olympics, with her first being at the 2021 Tokyo Games. She will also be the flag bearer at this year’s Games. All eyes will be on Pereira as she gears up for the Women’s 100m on August 2 and the Women’s 200m on August 4.

11. Loh Kean Yew

Ranked 12th place on the official Badminton World Federation (BWF) World Ranking, Loh is returning to the Olympics stronger than ever. At the Paris Games, Loh will be competing in the Men’s Singles. After a win against El Salvador’s Uriel Canjura on July 31, Loh advances to the men's singles knockout rounds and will face face China’s Li Shifeng on August 1. 

12. Yeo Jia Min

Finishing 14 at the BWF Race to Paris rankings, Yeo will be competing in the Women’s Singles at the 2024 Olympics. This will be Yeo’s second time competing in the Summer Olympics. Yeo became the first Singaporean badminton player to reach the knockout stages, facing Japan's world number 10 Aya Ohori on August 2.

13. Stephenie Chen

Chen qualified for the 2024 Games when she finished third in the K-1 500m race at the Asian canoe sprint Olympic qualifiers. This year will be the first since 2012 that Singapore will compete in canoeing at the Olympics. Catch Chen in action on August 7 at the Women’s kayak single 500m event.

14. Caroline Chew

Chew qualified for the 2024 Olympics after finishing second in the South East Asia and Oceania olympics rankings. She was the first Singaporean equestrienne to compete in the Olympics back in 2021. While she had previously competed with her horse Tribiani at the Tokyo Olympics, she competed with a new stallion, Zatchmo at the Paris Olympics. 

Chew and her hooved partner Zatchmo, took to the equestrian stage on July 30 for the Individual Dressage Grand Prix qualifier at Chateau de Versailles. Finishing 56th overall, the pair missed out on advancing to the final.

15. Amita Berthier

Known for her strategic mind and precise footwork, Berthier qualified for the Women’s Foil event through the Asia and Oceania zone International Fencing Federation (FIE) Grand Prix. Currently, she is ranked 28 in the world for women’s foil.

After a narrow loss to the United States’s Lauren Scruggs on July 28, Berthier ends her Olympic campaign. 

16. Kiria Tikanah Abdul Rahman

Tikanah was the first female Singaporean to compete in the épée event at the Tokyo Olympics. She qualified for the 2024 Games earlier this year by winning the Asia-Oceania Zonal Olympic Qualifier.

Embarking on a winning start at the Paris Olympics, Tikanah eventually exited the Olympic stage after a loss at the table-of-32 on July 28.

17. Saiyidah Aisyah Mohamed Rafa’ee

Singapore’s first Olympic rower, Aisyah made her first Olympic debut at the 2016 Rio Olympics. This year, she makes an Olympic comeback after earning a spot at the Women’s Single Sculls event through the 2024 Asia and Oceania Qualification Regatta in Chungju, South Korea. The national rower is set to compete at the Women’s Single Sculls Final E event in Paris on August 2.

18. Maximilian Maeder

This Singaporean kitesurfer is only 17 years old, and is currently the Asian, European and World Champion in Formula Kite. He earned his spot in the Olympics after obtaining a gold at the 2023 Sailing World Championships.  The three-time youth world champion will be competing in the Men’s Formula Kite event in Paris on August 6.

 

19. Ryan Lo

Lo clinched his spot in the 2024 Olympics after securing a gold medal at the Asian Games. He will compete in the Men’s Laser sailing event. He will also be the flag bearer at this year’s Games. Lo will be setting his course on August 1 at the Men’s dinghy event in the Marseille Marina. 

20. Jonathan Tan

Tan set a personal best record at the 2023 Southeast Asian (SEA) Games, securing himself a spot at the Paris Olympics. 

Tan recorded a fifth-place finish in his heat at the Men’s 100m freestyle event on July 30, leaving him 38th out of 79 spots, missing a chance at the semi-finals. He will be competing at the Men’s 50m freestyle heats on August 1. 

21. Letitia Sim

This year, Sim will be making her Olympic debut and representing Singapore at the Women’s 100m breaststroke event. Sim made the cut after finishing second at the Women’s 100m breaststroke event at the Japan Open in 2023. 

At the Women’s 200m breaststroke event in Paris, Sim missed out on one of the 16 semi-final spots after finishing 25th in Heat 3. Sim is poised to swim the Women’s 4 x 100m Women’s Medley Relay alongside her sister, Levenia Sim, on August 3. 

22. Levenia Sim

Together with her sister Letitia, Levenia will make her Olympic debut in Paris this year on August 3. She will be competing in the Women’s 4 x 100m Medley Relay. 

23. Quah Jing Wen

Quah specialises in individual medley, butterfly and freestyle events. At this year’s 2024 Games, you’ll find her competing in the Women’s 4 x 100m Medley Relay alongside the Sim sisters on August 3.
