From an expansive dining hall to cardboard beds, here’s a look at what goes on in the athletes’ Olympic Village

The Paris Olympics kicked off on July 26 and apart from its extravagant opening ceremony, lavish sports arenas and exciting competitions, the Olympic Village has been in the spotlight—after all, this village is typically restricted for the camera crew and cheering fans, making it all the more mysterious.

According to the official Olympics website, this year’s Village accommodates 14,250 athletes during the Olympic Games and is set to house 8,000 athletes during the Paralympic Games (August 28 to September 8) and feature a dining area, medical clinic and more. After the games, the Village will be converted into a neighbourhood with a hotel, 2,500 new homes, gardens and parks, and shops, among others.

Fortunately for us, many Olympians have begun documenting their experiences in the village and sharing them on social media, providing us with a glimpse into their home for the next few days.

This year, bedrooms have been designed with climate consciousness in mind. This means sleeping on cardboard beds fitted with mattresses made from AirFiber by Japanese bedding company Airweave. Each mattress also comprises three modules that offer various levels of firmness. The beds will be recycled into various products after the Games.

The organiser’s emphasis on sustainability also means forgoing air conditioning in the rooms. Instead, they have opted for a more environmentally friendly water-cooling system where a geothermal system pipes in cool water underneath floors.

Singaporean swimmer and Tatler Singapore’s July cover star Quah Jing Wen posted an Olympic Village room tour on Instagram and TikTok, showing off the living area. “Not bad if I must say so myself,” she comments in the video.

The food

At the Dining Hall, Olympians can dig into cuisine from across the globe ranging from French to African. Food is served buffet-style at various stations including the bakery, salad bar, hot food and more. Filipino gymnast Aleah Finnegan shared snippets of the extensive hall in a TikTok post, highlighting its vast food options.

Apart from the dining hall, Singaporean rower Aisyah Rafa’ee highlights in an Instagram story how there are booths near the dining hall serving up “small servings of gourmet food prepared for you on the spot by a chef”. Her following Instagram story highlighted dishes like goat cheese, poached egg and truffle stuffed in a croissant. “Everyone at the Village is so nice,” she adds.

Food is available all around the Village. On top of vending machines dispensing bottled water, grab-and-go booths offering French pastries and bakes are dotted around the village.

There’s plenty to do in the Olympic Village other than sleeping and eating. For example, lounge areas feature beanbags and games for athletes to unwind, while the Village’s mindfulness centre offers meditation sessions (via VR headsets) and paint-by-numbers activities. A 24-hour fitness centre is also available, complete with equipment and space required for athletes to train and recover. Meanwhile, the Village Plaza hosts a range of services for Olympians including a hair salon, supermarket, post office and more.

For the first time in Olympic history, the Village also houses a nursery, providing a comfortable environment for athlete parents to spend time with their young ones. With support from P&G brand Pampers, the nursery also provides nappies and wipes for young ones.
